The 4 Best Family Friendly Hiking Trails In The Bay Area

bay area, Family Fitness, family hiking, healthy family
We love to stay active as a family and one of our favorite activities to do on the weekends in the Bay Area is to go hiking. Eric and I are native to San Jose and hiked a ton as kids. We are also avid trail runners.  Some of these trails we hiked as kids and some we found when we used to explore trails before we had kids of our own .  If you are looking for good stroller friendly running trails, some of these are on that list too.  Check out this post if you want to run with your kids.  But, there are very few hiking and stroller friendly trails. We have personally been to all 4 of these with our Double Bob a.k.a our Smart car.…

5 Day No Sugar Challenge

Uncategorized
Need a good reason to dump all that Easter Candy?  My husband and I decided we need more accountability on our sugar cravings. So, we decided to embark on a 5 Day No Sugar Challenge starting on April 4.  Just 3 days after Easter Sunday! Right around this time of year, we get an overload of candy and sweets from all the Easter activities that we go to with our kids.  Not to mention we get tempted by all the candy the Easter bunny leaves in their baskets. My biggest hurdle will be my coffee drink of choice.  I wish I didn't like sugary coffee drinks.  But, ooooohhh how I love my mochas.  I really want to do this to see how my body will feel after giving up…

5 Tips to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy

healthy family, healthy teeth, pediatric dentist
We have a special guest post this month written by one of our loyal Fit Parent Bootcampers, Dr. Natalie Vander Kam of Cupertino Pediatric Dentistry.  She is also our wonderful pediatric dentist for both of our children! [caption id="attachment_825" align="aligncenter" width="291"] Dr. Natalie shows her son how to do a shoulder press at bootcamp.[/caption] Did you know that February is National Children's Dental Health Month? Here are the 5 Tips to Keep Your Child's Teeth Healthy:  1) Consistency is key! Start cleaning or wiping your child’s teeth and gums as soon as the first tooth begins to appear, usually between 6-10 months of age.  This is when cavity causing bacteria can begin colonizing in the mouth, only once there is a hard surface to live on! At the beginning, use…

5 #MomHacks to Help Keep Your Baby in a Stroller

5 #MomHacks to Help Keep Your Baby in a Stroller

Family Fitness
We hear this all the time, “Oh, I can’t go to your bootcamp, my kid will never stay in a stroller!”  Ohhhh. This can be so frustrating to hear.  But, to me this is more of a challenge worth overcoming than it is a frustration that can’t be fixed.  It is all about MINDSET! And sometimes it is helpful to teach our children these mindset beliefs just as much as it is good for ourselves.   What is Mindset?   Well, if you are new to Mindset practices, please check out Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset, to really understand this better.   I was introduced to the book seven years ago and I devoured it.  Mindset is a way of thinking.  Either you can have a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset.…

What makes Fit Parent Bootcamp unique?

Uncategorized
Our Story It is hard to pinpoint exactly the moment that we knew that something special was going on at Fit Parent Bootcamp. Over time, it just became apparent that our family loved attending classes together.  Whether our daughter screamed because she was teething or our son threw a tantrum because he didn’t want to sit in the stroller, we still loved getting outside and going to class.  It actually felt better to be at class than at home. It is such a positive family experience for us each Saturday: our son loves seeing his friends each week, and our daughter tends to stare at us with a mixture of awe and curiosity when we do burpees.   We truly enjoy the camaraderie of completing a workout with a group of awesome…

5 Healthy Habits for Dads

Uncategorized
I grew up being active, spending time at the gym and being somewhat thoughtful about my health.  Although, I will confess my pre-married life included a dinner 1-2 times per week that consisted of a frozen burrito (or two) and a handful of carrots (that's most of the food groups, right?). As I've moved into fatherhood and now have two children of my own (ages 11 months and 2 years), I've begun to realize the challenge of staying in shape.  All dads today can relate to the constant pull between work obligations, house chores, parenting and remembering to nurture your marriage.  And, personal time?  What's that? [caption id="attachment_589" align="aligncenter" width="300"] At the playground after work with my two kids.[/caption] Now that I'm closer to 40 than 30, I want to…

6 Best Stroller Friendly Running Trails in the Bay Area

Family Fitness, healthy family, running with kids
The weather is finally sunny and beautiful.  If you are like our family, we are so excited to get outside and move.  Spring is a great time to start training for a race or to enjoy a nice stroll on the numerous trails in the Bay Area.  We are so fortunate to have so many parks in our area. But, it can be difficult to know which ones to go to with a stroller and where you can find parking.  All of the parks and trails we recommend have easy to access parking.  The LAST thing you want to do with little kids is hunt around for parking spots.   *Extra Bonus- most of these trails have parks for the little ones.  We tend to bribe our older son with…

4 Easy Fitness Apps to Help You Workout At Home

Uncategorized
We completely understand why it is so hard to get to the gym five times a week.  Two kids and a full-time job are a great excuse for me. But, I try to workout 5-6 times a week because I am a nicer person, wife and mom when I do so regularly.  There are tons of options to do an in-home workout, yet it can be difficult to know where to start.  Our mantra on busy weeknights: 30 minutes working out is better than 30 minutes on the couch. Here are some of our favorites:   1) Workout Trainer by Skimble - Free App We use this app the most frequently to do weeknight workouts.  It is not very fancy, but I like the simplicity.  There is a voice trainer…

7 Ways to Stay Fit and Healthy as a Family

Family Fitness
One of our number one reasons for starting Fit Parent Bootcamp is that we wanted our kids to see us leading an active lifestyle.  Like most families with two kids, we have found it difficult to balance everything.  Here are some tips for staying fit and healthy as a family. 1. Walk Every Night This has become our nightly routine and we savor the time as a family. After dinner is over, we leave the dishes behind and head out to walk in our neighborhood for 30 minutes. It’s a great way to reconnect after a long day of working. Although it can be a struggle in the winter time, we wear reflective vests and bring lights so we’re visible and our two year old is occupied with flashing lights.…
